The Northville Art House, in partnership with Maybury State Park and the Friends of Maybury State Park, invites artists to paint, draw, and sketch in the open air the natural beauty of the Maybury State Park. Selected by a juror, artists create work at the Maybury State Park Paint-Out to be exhibited at the Northville Art House. Prizes totaling $1000 will be presented by the juror at the opening reception for the exhibition.
Eligibility: Artists, 18 and over, in the continental U.S
Juror: Valerie Allen received her BFA from University of Cincinnati. She is the curator of Studio 23 in Bay City, Michigan and a certified working artist for Golden Artist Colors. Learn more>>
Process: Submit digital images of 3 plein-air artworks created in the past 3 years from which the juror will select approximately 40 artists to create an unlimited amount of artwork in the Maybury State Park (MSP) Paint-Out with 3 of the works, selected by the artists, to be installed in the exhibition.

Procedure: Upload 3 digital images in jpg format less than 4MB and labeled as LastName-ArtworkTitle.jpg. with title, medium, art dimensions and creation location for each image. Submit bio and artist statement.
Fee: Non-refundable fees of $35 for non-members and $25 for Northville Art House members.

Maybury State Park contains almost 1,000 acres of gently rolling terrain, open meadow, mature forest, a variety of wildlife and wildflowers that offers visitors the opportunity to get involved in outdoor recreation activities, understand the history of the land, and appreciate the natural environment. Artists have the opportunity celebrate the beauty and wonder of nature and inspire people to visit and be aware of the park’s assets and activities through art.
The Friends of Maybury State Park is a dedicated group that supports and promotes the park and features such as the Bicycle, Hiking and Equestrian Trails, Riding Stable, Fishing Pond, Picnic Shelters, and Playground. Nearby Maybury Farm is supported by the Northville Community Foundation and not part of the park access.
Dates: July 23 – July 25, 2021, rain or shine.
Each artist may decide on specific unrestricted locations to create artwork. Various locations will be recommended prior to the event with proximity to park features. Artists are encouraged to visit the park before the Paint-Out to determine locations and share with the Art House as the event will be promoted as spectator-friendly to park visitors.
Equipment: Each artist is responsible for bringing, set-up and “Leave No Trace” clean-up of all art equipment and supplies. No firelighting materials allowed. Restrooms available at the park.
Hours: Artists must create all artwork in the open air at permitted locations within the park between 8 am – 10 pm.
Admission: Recreation Passports are required for all vehicles that enter a Michigan State Park. Passports can be purchased at the Michigan Secretary of State when renewing your license plate ($12 with license renewal for Michigan residents), or at each park entrance ($9 day / $17 annual). We are seeking sponsorship to cover the entrance cost for artists.
NEW: Fee is covered by a sponsorship. The admission will be FREE for artists.
Stamped Artwork: Artists may create an unlimited amount of works on canvas, panel, board or paper not to exceed 36 inches. Each must have an authentication stamp visible on the back of the surface to be eligible for the exhibition.
Artist Check-in: Artists may pick-up an information packet and stamps at the Northville Art House on Thursday, July 22, 10 am – 5 pm, Friday, July 23, 10 am – 5 pm or Saturday, July 24, 11 am – 3 pm. (Other TBD).
COVID-19 Guidelines: The Paint-Out will be following all current guidance issued by the CDC, DNR, and the State of Michigan.
Cancellation: The event is rain or shine, however, in case of severe inclement weather, participants are advised to take appropriate shelter including the use of the park headquarters for tornado evacuation.
The Northville Art House, a n0nprofit 501(c)3 art facility in historic downtown Northville, MI, has cultivated the Arts through creative experiences and educational programs in the Metro Detroit community since 2005. Exhibitions, art festivals, and an artisan store present the work of emerging and established artists. In-house workshops, virtual classes, summer camps, and community outreach provide art education to individuals of all ages (3+) and levels.
The Art House is a gathering place where over 20,000 artists and the patrons come together annually, earning the reputation as “this funky little house…making a big impact on the region’s art scene!”

Exhibited Artwork: Each artist may select up to 3 works for inclusion into the exhibition. Artwork must be for sale, in excellent condition, and properly stamped and labeled with name on back. All work must be ready for hanging with hooks and wire. Canvases must be framed, wrapped, or have painted sides. Works on paper must be framed. Sawtooth claw hangers are not accepted.’

Art Delivery: Hand-delivered artwork drop-off times are Monday, July 26, 10 am – 1 pm.
Art Pick-Up: Unsold artwork may be picked-up on August 22 – 23, 12 – 2 pm, and after during regular gallery hours. Work not picked up after 30 days will be considered abandoned and become the Art House property.
Art Sales: A 35% commission will be charged on all art for sale. Art may not be removed during the exhibition.
Return Shipping: All costs, including packing, shipping and liability for damage, are the artist’s responsibility. A pre-paid label, stamps or payment for shipped artwork must be provided.
Terms and Conditions: Submissions to the exhibition shall constitute an agreement to comply with terms and conditions set forth in the call for entries, entry form and in the Art Exhibition and Sales Agreement.
