West of Center: Art That Pushes Boundaries

-The Northville Art House seeks contemporary artworks created in any media by artists, 18 and over, who build upon artistic tradition and embrace new experiments in the visual arts for the 13th annual West of Center: Art that Pushes Boundaries.Artists are encouraged to push the boundaries of art imagery and practices. Boundaries to consider include those set by traditional techniques, materials, concepts, genre, subject matter, personal, societal etc.

Juried by Tara Welch, Executive Director of Studio 23/The Arts Center, the exhibition has $700 in cash awards for 1st-4th place plus honorable mentions. Non-refundable fee of $35 for non-members and $25 for members, entitles a submission of 3 works in any media, including electronic and digital, maximum size 54 inches. Entries will be juried from JPEG images submitted online. Deadline: July 18, Notification: July 30.

West of Center will open on Wednesday, September and run through September 26 during Art House hours, Wednesday through Friday, 10 am – 3 pm and Saturday 11 am – 3 pm A virtual exhibition will be presented simultaneously. A reception will be held on Friday, September 10, 5 – 8 pm, with awards announced at 6 pm.


Exhibition Juror Tara Welch is the Executive Director of Studio 23/The Arts Center in Bay City, MI. She received a Bachelor of Arts in both Art and History from Saginaw Valley State University in 2014. She has been an art instructor at Studio 23/The Arts Center and in Midland K-4 as well as an arts educator at the Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, MI.

Tara has juried a number of exhibitions including at Art in the Loft, Northeast Michigan Center for Fine Arts in Alpena, MI and initiated a number of public art programs including Art Around the City and Chalk Walk Festival in Bay City.

Procedure: Upload 3 digital images in jpg format less than 4MB and labeled as LastName-ArtworkTitle.jpg. with title, medium, art dimensions and creation location for each image. Submit bio and artist statement.

Fee: Non-refundable fees of $35 for non-members and $25 for Northville Art House members.

Deadline: All entries MUST be submitted by Sunday, July 18, 11:59 PM EST.

Notification of Acceptance: Artists will be notified by email on Friday, July 30.

Admission and Hours: Free; Wednesday – Thursday 10 am – 6 pm and Friday- Saturday 11 – 3 pm. Extended hours as advertised.


Prizes: $700 in cash awards for 1st – 4th Place: $350, $200, $100, and $50; Honorable Mention Awards.

Opening Reception: Friday, September 10, 5 – 8 PM with Awards Presentation at 7 PM.


Delivery Dates

  • Pre-paid shipped artwork should arrive on or before Monday, August 23.
  • Hand-delivered artwork drop-off times are Sunday & Monday, August 22 – 23, 12 – 2 pm. 
  • Artwork should be labeled with name and title. A temporary label is included below.
  • Accepted works that differ dramatically from the submitted images may be refused.


  • All costs, including packing, shipping and liability for damage, are the artist’s responsibility.
  • A pre-paid return label, stamps or payment for shipped artwork must be included as well as instructions for special installations.
  • Please email tracking number to exhibits@northvillearthouse.org.


  • Artwork may be picked-up on September 26 – 27, 12 – 2 pm
  • And after during regular gallery hours, Wed – Thu 10 am – 6 pm and Fri- Sat 11 – 3 pm
  • Artists call or email ahead to authorize a representative to pick-up their work.
  • Return artwork will be packed in the same / similar materials and shipped by October 2.
  • Artwork not picked up 30 days after the exhibition will be considered abandoned and become the property of Northville Art House.


Art Sales: A 35% commission will be charged on all art for sale. Art may not be removed during the exhibition.

Terms and Conditions: Submissions to the exhibition shall constitute an agreement to comply with terms and conditions set forth in the call for entries, entry form and in the Art Exhibition and Sales Agreement.
