June 4 – 26: Home and Away: The Paintings of Karen VanDam Michmerhuizen & Pamela Day

Reception: Friday, June 4, 5 pm – 8 pm

Raised in the rolling farmlands of western Michigan, Karen VanDam Michmerhuizen has long been aware of the constant interplay of light and shadow caused by the clouds which continually form and drift ashore along Lake Michigan. The vivid richness of the seasons forms a lavish palette that delights her senses and inspires her artistic endeavors. Karen paints outdoors applying oil and cold-wax to canvas with a brush and palette knife. Her plein-air landscapes capture the light, colors, and shapes she admired as a child, drawing viewers into their natural settings.

Inspired by a visit to Claude Monet’s home and gardens in Normandy, France, Pamela Day shares the development of a particular grouping of giant rhubarb—from rising bulb to fanned out leaves—in her Giverny in Spring series. She paints with gouache, a versatile and opaque watercolor, to capture detailed and expressive views of the flora and foliage. Each painting reflects a new stage with a variety of textures, shades of natural colors, and reflections of light in Pamela’s signature “stylized-realism” approach.
