Youth Classes and Workshops, Ages 5 – 16

Youth Classes and Workshops for Ages 5 – 17, offer the opportunity to experiment, learn, and develop art skills in small outdoor and classroom sizes. Visual art instruction covers painting, drawing, printmaking, hand-sculpture, photography, graphic design, crafts, and mixed-media. Programs are led by Art House instructors and offered in daily or weekly sessions in the classroom. Classes limited to 10-12 students.

REFUND / CANCELLATION POLICY

A refund will be issued minus a 10% non-refundable deposit on ALL classes and workshops when cancelled 48 hours or more before the first class or workshop starts. Students who wish to cancel less than 48 hours before the first day of class are not eligible for a refund or credit.

Mandala Art Therapy: Meditative Art for Inner Growth (ages 12+)

The word Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means circle or center. Creating a symmetrical or organic design within a circle can be a very meditative process which can create a sense of calm and focus. Mandala art can be used for self-expression, spiritual transformation, and healing. In this two-week series an art therapist will guide you to create Mandala artwork which can facilitate inner growth.

In this dynamic art class, young homeschooling artists will explore art history by studying classic masters. Each week, students will learn about a different artist and create their own masterpieces inspired by these styles using various media. This class combines art history with hands-on creativity, allowing participants to discover and experiment with a range of artistic techniques and materials. 


3D Art for ages 5-9

In this engaging and hands-on art class, young artists will dive into the exciting world of 3D art. Each week, they’ll explore different materials and techniques to create their own unique three-dimensional masterpieces. Through fun and creative projects, students will develop their fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and artistic expression. 


Youth Printmaking for ages 8-12

In this class students will create prints inspired by ancient Greek, Asian, Native American art, and nature. They will explore a variety of printmaking techniques involving monoprints, stamps and stencil methods.  

 


Youth Creative Threads for ages 8-13

Embark on a creative journey with six-week sewing and design course. Designed for all skill levels, this course offers a hands-on introduction to the fundamentals of sewing, from mastering the sewing machine to exploring the basic principles of design. Each class is structured to build confidence and skills progressively, culminating in personally made projects that showcase your new skills and style. Kids will select the final project during the first class. 


Teen Drawing and Painting for ages 10-15

Immerse yourself in a world of colors, creativity, and imagination as we explore various painting & drawing techniques. In this class, students will learn the basics of painting and drawing, through the fundamentals of composition, color theory, shading, perspective, and more. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your passion for art and a willingness to explore. 


Beginners Figure Drawing for ages 14+

Students will bring their own supplies for this comprehensive figure drawing course, which uses clothed live models. You’ll learn the basics of gesture drawing and human anatomy as it applies to figure art. The course will cover drawing specific body parts, such as hands, faces, and the full body, using basic shapes to construct the human form. Additionally, you’ll explore how light affects the form and understand measurements in body proportions.

Each class will begin with a short art history lecture on the old masters’ approach to figure drawing, followed by demonstrations from Sunny.

 


Youth Mixed Media for ages 10-13

This mixed media art class invites tweens to explore a diverse range of artistic techniques and materials. Students will experiment with combining various media to create unique, textured, and layered artworks. Each week, they will delve into a new project that encourages creative expression, critical thinking, and innovative use of materials. 


Northville Children’s Chorale for ages 5-8

The Northville Art House is partnering with the Northville Chorale to introduce the Northville Children‘s Chorale. This class is designed to be a fun and encouraging choir experience and will introduce students to a variety of vocal techniques and songs. The class will culminate with a performance on December 7th at the Marquis Theatre! 


Youth Paint Pouring Workshop for ages 8-12

Experiment with this fun technique using fluid paint on canvas and boards. We will create at least 3 unique pieces. Due to drying time the artwork will need to be picked up a few days after the workshop.

 


Youth Fairy Garden Workshop for ages 7-11

Young artists will create a fall fairy garden with a painted house, stepping stones and trees. Students will also create toadstools and pumpkins out of clay to personalize their magical 3D landscape. 


Youth Weaving 2-Day Workshop for ages 8+

In this workshop students will create a handwoven tapestry that can be used as a wall hanging. The process of weaving will be taught from start to finish by learning to thread the warp on a cardboard loom and finally finish the edges of the woven piece. Students will produce a variety of woven patterns while using a simple loom which will be included but they will bring their own yarn.

 


Adult + Child Halloween Cookie Decorating Workshop for ages 5+

Come join a “spooktacular” morning of Halloween Cookie decorating fun! You and your child will enjoy making memories as you learn some “tricks” designing and decorating your very own set of Halloween themed cookies! All you need for this class is yourself and your child, as all materials will be provided! At the end of class, you will also receive a box to take your tasty treats home where you can show them off to all your goblin friends! 

One registration covers one adult and one child participants.


Fall Foliage – Mixed Media Foundations for Ages 12+

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create foundational elements such as value, texture and color through layered collaged paper. Together, we’ll begin with a basic underpainting of a simple object.  Experimenting with different weights and styles of papers, we’ll practice creating various values, shapes and movements.  Each student will choose their own colors and styles while receiving hands-on instructions to ensure a beautiful, finished painting.  

All materials will be provided, exclusive of smocks.  Please dress accordingly. 
 
All levels are welcome, and no experience is necessary but, please note, this workshop focuses on collage techniques- not foundational drawing or painting techniques. The underpainting will be basic and can accommodate any level of artist. Paintings can be taken home immediately. 


Create Art Together: A Parent/Child Workshop for Ages 7-11

Join this class and become familiar with the art of manga. Learn about the fundamentals of head and body proportions, movement, and facial expressions. Finally, all those skills will be put together for the creation of your own original character.

Throughout the course, participants will learn how to trace objects to form patterns, alter designs by adding new elements, and select fabrics that bring color and texture into their creations. They will develop skills in cutting, sewing, and patternmaking. This program teaches practical sewing skills, encourages creativity, boosts problem-solving abilities, and enhances confidence through design and creation. Kids can choose to make something for themselves or the doll.  

Kids are encouraged to bring a favorite top or sweatshirt to class.


Teen Drawing and Painting for ages 10-15

Gear up for the holiday season with our fun workshop, where families are invited to bring their own sweaters or skirts to transform into unique holiday garments. This one-day event is perfect for all ages and skill levels, offering a wonderful opportunity for families to bond over a shared creative activity. Participants will learn basics of hand sewing, and personalize their own garment with vibrant fabrics, festive appliques and playful embellishments. 

Participants must bring their own garment (t-shirt, sweater, sweatshirt, etc.) to decorate. All other decorating supplies will be provided. 

Each family member who is attending must register separately.

Festive Mixed Media Poinsettias for ages 12+

Together, we will work on layering a blend of paint pens, acrylic paint, and collage papers to create a one-of-a-kind seasonal painting featuring a vibrant poinsettia with shimmering metallic accentsEach student will choose their own colors and styles while receiving hands-on instructions to ensure a beautiful, finished paintingStudents will have the opportunity to accent their paintings with metallic foil, leaf or paints to create a lasting, artistic keepsake. 
 
All materials will be provided but feel free to bring a printed photo reference of a poinsettia and any holiday themed tissue papers, greeting cards or paper-based ephemera that you’d like to incorporate into your work of art (this is completely optional, not required)
