John Singer Sargent is well-known for his large-scale oil portrait paintings. But many don’t realize that he had a passion for drawing as well. In fact, in his last 15 years, while he only painted 30 portraits in oil, he created over 500 two-hour charcoal studies.
This one-day workshop will explore his passion for drawing and painting by dedicating the first half of our day to working in black and white and the second half to color. A live model will be present for the duration of the day.

Through guided exercises, students will discover how artists use color to create mood, atmosphere, and visual harmony while developing a personal palette that reflects their own artistic voice.

We will start with the basics, set up, mixing colors, value, and composition. We will work with still lives, plein air (painting outside in the open air) if weather permits, and from photographs. I will be doing live demonstrations in class.
Working from still lives is the best way to train your eye for composition, three-dimensional drawing and painting techniques. Plein air teaches you about color in natural light and through atmosphere. Using what you learn from these two experiences can then be applied to help you paint successfully from photographs.
Oil paint preferred, acrylic is also fine.
