Workshops

Youth, Teen, and Adult Workshops offer the opportunity for students to experiment, learn, and develop art skills in small classroom sizes. Adult workshops are for ages 16+ unless otherwise noted. Workshops are led by Northville Art House instructors and are offered in one- or two-day sessions. Each workshop is limited to 10 students. Register today!

REFUND / CANCELLATION POLICY

A refund will be issued minus a 10% non-refundable deposit on ALL classes and workshops when cancelled 48 hours or more before the first class or workshop starts. Students who wish to cancel less than 48 hours before the first day of class are not eligible for a refund or credit.

Miniature Farmstand for ages 16+

John Singer Sargent is well-known for his large-scale oil portrait paintings. But many don’t realize that he had a passion for drawing as well. In fact, in his last 15 years, while he only painted 30 portraits in oil, he created over 500 two-hour charcoal studies.  

This one-day workshop will explore his passion for drawing and painting by dedicating the first half of our day to working in black and white and the second half to color. A live model will be present for the duration of the day.

Boho Macrame Crystal Suncatcher for ages 16+

Join us for a relaxing and creative beginner macrame workshop. You’ll learn how to make a beautifully textured wall hanging with a flower crystal. Each participant will create this chevron-shaped design using three basic knotting techniques with the addition of a sparkling colorful ornament. Hang it by a window or in a covered outdoor space and watch the fringe and light dance!   


Mini Makers: Mindful Felt Creations for ages 5-9

Let your child’s imagination come to life in this playful, beginner-friendly textile workshop! Young makers will explore the fundamentals of fabric art by selecting from a vibrant collection of pre-cut felt animal elements, seasonal fruits, and imaginative fantasy creatures. Guided by a professional fashion designer, students will learn essential hand-stitching layout techniques using child-safe, blunt embroidery needles and colorful fibers to assemble their characters. Once stitched, kids will dive into the design process, personalizing their creations with dimensional embellishments, textures, and fabric details. This engaging, hands-on class is a wonderful introduction to construction, fine motor development, and artistic storytelling as children bring their unique, cuddly masterpieces to life. 


Native Plants Workshop for ages 16+

The Northville Art House and Plymouth Pollinators are teaming up to teach you about native plants and why they are crucial for the environment. In this collaborative workshop, Lindsay Nielsen from the Plymouth Pollinators will discuss fall clean-up and seed harvesting. This discussion will be followed by a painting workshop focused on native plants led by Lauren Garcellano. 


Introduction to Encaustic Painting Workshop for ages 16+

Students will explore the versatile art of painting with molten, pigmented wax. Various encaustic techniques will be covered including layering, fusing, incising, image transfers and embellishments. We will take a mixed media approach by combining the wax with handmade paper, fabric, metal leaf, and pastels. This class is intended for beginners, safety and material resources will be covered so students can set up their own encaustic studio at home. 


Colorful Koi Two-Day Workshop for ages 12+

Dive into the serene and shimmering world of koi fish in this vibrant, beginner-friendly mixed media workshop with artist Shadia Derbyshire. Over two creative days, you’ll explore the art of collage through the graceful forms and flowing movement of koi—symbols of perseverance, balance, and good fortune. 

We’ll begin with an acrylic underpainting to establish color and motion beneath the surface, then build layers of patterned, textured, and translucent papers to capture the depth and rhythm of koi gliding through water. Shadia will guide you step by step as you experiment with color harmony, paper layering, and composition to bring your koi to life in a luminous, modern style. 

This workshop is perfect for all skill levels—no prior art experience required! Our focus will be on collage and layering techniques rather than traditional drawing or painting. By the end, you’ll have a stunning, ready-to-hang koi collage that reflects both your creativity and the tranquil energy of these beautiful fish. 


Creative Denim Design Workshop for ages 16+

All the supplies will be provided; just bring any denim piece you would love to customize (jeans, a jacket, a tote bag or anything else made of denim). 


Fairy Art Workshop for ages 6-10

Micro Memoir Workshop for ages 16+

Have you always wanted to write a memoir or were curious about the process? This workshop will focus on Micro-Memoir, a means to vibrantly write about a single event. Using class exercises and clues from your own photo, memento, artwork, or memory, you’ll learn to design your writing voice, establish your memoir’s arc, and choose a writing vessel (prose, letter, poem, etc.) that fits your episode. Workshop goal is for you to leave with a draft that captures a single event from your life, a family member, or friend. These events can be tied together to build broader stories.  

Please bring a photo, memento, artwork or just a memory to write from. Also bring a notebook and pen or laptop to record your work.

Reworked Streetwear: The Spliced Hoodie Intensive for ages 12-18

Step into the world of high-concept, sustainable streetwear design! In this workshop, students will learn how to deconstruct and radically transform ordinary clothing into an abstract, one-of-a-kind piece of wearable art. Using the popular “splicing” technique, students will cut apart two different pre-loved garments (like hoodies, sweatshirts, or graphic tees) and reconstruct them—merging contrasting colors, graphics, and textures into a unified designer piece. Students will explore garment structural design, learn machine sewing, and use specialized hand-stitching techniques like Japanese Sashiko and Boro patchwork. To fully personalize their designs, students will also incorporate surface art using acrylic paint and fabric markers. This class pushes the boundaries of traditional sewing, celebrating creative problem-solving, bold self-expression, and mindful imperfection. Suitable for beginners. 


Fall Fabric Collage Workshop for ages 16+

It’s time to visit the pumpkin patch! The embroidered fabric collage pumpkin patch, that is. Using fall-themed fabrics, we will create collage scenes and then embroider and embellish them. As a group, we will have the same materials – fabrics, threads, sequins, and beads – and the same theme – a fall pumpkin scene. The magic will be in seeing how each of us create a different fabric collage using the same materials. 

No experience in embroidery necessary. Participants are welcome to bring fabrics and other supplies from home to supplement the provided materials. 


Adult/Child Halloween Cookie Decorating Workshop for ages 5+

Come join Sweetflour LLC for a “bootiful” time decorating some Halloween sweets with your little pumpkin! You and your child will enjoy making memories as you learn some cookie decorating “tricks” creating these Halloween themed cookie “treats”! All you need for this class is yourself and your child as all materials will be provided including a box to take your sweet creations home in! 


Two Day Watercolor Workshop for ages 16+

Capture the memory of a meaningful place by turning it into a watercolor painting! Students will bring 8” x 10” photos of a location they would like to commemorate. We’ll explore color theory, color mixing, and watercolor techniques—including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry—using a variety of papers. Students will also get to experiment with creating texture. If you’re unsure about your drawing skills, no worries—tracing and image transfer options will be available, along with guidance on composition and drawing. This class is ideal for beginners and intermediate painters, but all levels are welcome! 


Creative Calm: Mindfulness Art Workshop for ages 18+

Using a variety of mixed media on paper, you will be guided step-by-step through drawing organic, fluid lines and softening their intersections. This rhythmic, intentional process acts as a powerful somatic tool to soothe the nervous system, quiet the mind, and stimulate creative problem-solving. No prior drawing or artistic experience is required; this class is entirely focused on the relaxing flow of creation, self-care, and internal harmony. Neurographic Fashion Lab: Mindful Tote Bag Design for ages 10-18

Express yourself, unwind, and design your new favorite accessory! Royal Icing Basics Workshop for ages 16+

If you struggle with getting your icing to the right consistency or just want to learn how to make royal icing and use it to decorate your holiday cookies, this is the class for you! You will make royal icing from scratch and learn how to color and thin down the icing to different consistencies. Then, under Audrey’s instruction, you will learn how to use these varying consistencies to decorate these cozy fall themed sugar cookies.  

During class, participants will also be given tips on how to bake beautiful cut-out cookies that won’t spread in addition to learning how to make and use royal icing and its various consistencies. Participants will leave class with a basic understanding of how to make royal icing and how to apply sugar cookie decorating skills to cookies at home! 


Satin Neck Scarf Workshop for ages 12+

Hidden Blooms Workshop for ages 12+

Ready to explore the magic of painting what’s not there? In this lively and beginner-friendly workshop, artist Shadia Derbyshire will introduce you to the beautiful art of negative painting—a technique that reveals your subject by painting around it rather than inside the lines. We’ll pair this with rich collage layering to create a dynamic, textural floral composition that’s bursting with color and depth. 

We’ll begin with a colorful, abstract underpainting, then build up layers of collage papers to add pattern, texture, and personality. From there, you’ll learn how to use negative painting techniques to carve out elegant floral shapes—allowing your bouquet to emerge organically from the layers beneath. 

You’ll Learn How To: 

  • Use negative space to define shapes and add visual interest

Wycinanki: Holiday-Themed Cut Paper Workshop for ages 12+

Stitch Craft 101: Sewing Basics, Alterations, and Open Studio Support for ages 18+

Whether you are sitting down at a sewing machine for the very first time or seeking expert guidance to complete a complex personal project, this supportive workshop offers the perfect collaborative environment. The class is structured to meet you exactly at your skill level.  

We will cover the foundational essentials: machine setup, threading, troubleshooting, and mastering precise hand and machine stitches. You will also learn practical garment adjustment tips and professional hemming techniques. For intermediate and continuing students, this workshop serves as an open-design studio. Bring in your current independent sewing projects, patterns, or garments needing specific alterations, and receive personalized, step-by-step guidance, tailoring advice, and structural troubleshooting to achieve professional results. Enjoy a relaxed, creative space designed to build your skills and bring your ideas to life.
