January 9 – February 7: Adam Doerres, Farmington Hills, MI
Since Adam Doerres was a child, they have been experimenting on and off with art, from arranging rocks to crude simple drawings. Additionally, they have had the privilege of traveling and growing up in Europe, experiencing cultural and artistic influences in Germany, Italy and Spain.
Over the years, Adam has experimented with most mediums, ceramics inspired by Japanese tea ceremonies, wooden carvings, ink brush calligraphy, paper art, jewelry, metal work and watercolor.
Currently Adam’s main medium is watercolor. They learned it at the Northville Art House at the start of COVID. Their interest in it grew as they worked at the Living and Learning Center in Northville as a farmhand and groundskeeper to document the lives and memories of the animals living there.
In the work Adam uses the changeability of the medium to express emotions, energy and themes ranging from the religious and spiritual, to the humble and down to earth.
Big influences include the works of living artists like Michael Bertiaux, Naoko Takeuchi, H.E. Garchen Rinpoche, and Ken Sugimori. The works of early modern and classical artists such as Elisabeth Le Brun, Salvador Dali, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and Vincent Van Gogh, as well as the art of Japanese religious figures such as Konko Daijin, Nichiren Shonin, Hakuin Ekaku and Enku have also influenced the artist.
When not painting, Adam spends time volunteering at Tollgate Farm, hanging out with chickens, reading, sleeping, crawling through the underbrush or has their nose in Pokémon media or something about chickens.
Adam would like to give special thanks to the dear chickens both alive and passed. They are very patient, supportive, and loving; they are parents and six friends–Oli, Bones, Max, Ian, Yuri, and Pigeon–who have tolerated the artist’s art and non-art shenanigans over the years.
