Workshops

Youth, Teen, and Adult Workshops offer the opportunity for students to experiment, learn, and develop art skills in small classroom sizes. Adult workshops are for ages 16+ unless otherwise noted. Workshops are led by Northville Art House instructors and are offered in one- or two-day sessions. Each workshop is limited to 10 students. Register today!

REFUND / CANCELLATION POLICY

A refund will be issued minus a 10% non-refundable deposit on ALL classes and workshops when cancelled 48 hours or more before the first class or workshop starts. Students who wish to cancel less than 48 hours before the first day of class are not eligible for a refund or credit.

Festive Mixed Media Poinsettia for ages 12+

Get into the holiday spirit with this joyful, hands-on mixed media workshop! Join artist Shadia Derbyshire for a fun and festive creative session where we’ll layer vibrant acrylics, playful paint pens, and beautiful collage papers to create a dazzling poinsettia masterpiece—complete with shimmering metallic accents.
 
You’ll be guided step-by-step while choosing your own color palette and design style to make a truly unique holiday keepsake. Want to add extra sparkle? We’ll explore how to incorporate metallic foils, leafing, and iridescent paints for that magical holiday glow!
 
All materials are provided, but feel free to bring a printed poinsettia photo for inspiration and any fun holiday-themed tissue papers, greeting cards, or decorative paper bits you’d like to use in your collage.
 
No experience? No problem! This workshop is perfect for all skill levels—especially beginners. Just note: we’ll be focusing on layering and collage rather than traditional drawing or painting techniques. You’ll leave with a beautiful finished piece, ready to display or to gift!

Royal Icing Basics Cookie Decorating Workshop for ages 16+

One of the most asked questions with sugar cookie decorating is, “How do you make royal icing the right consistency to decorate with?” If you struggle with getting your icing to the right consistency or just want to learn how to decorate those fancy sugar cookies you see using royal icing, this is the class for you! 

Join Audrey Edwards owner of Sweetflour LLC for a hands-on experience as she takes you through the royal icing making process from scratch. You will use the icing made in class to decorate some holiday themed sugar cookies. 



Homeschool Workshop: Pretty “Ugly” Sweater Designs for ages 5+

Get ready to kick off the holiday season with creativity and laughter! In this fun, hands-on workshop designed just for homeschool kids, students will turn plain sweaters or skirts into festive, one-of-a-kind holiday outfits using colorful fabrics, trims, appliqués, and playful embellishments. 

Guided by a professional fashion designer, participants will learn basic hand sewing techniques and explore the art of creative styling—adding their flair to a “pretty ugly” holiday garment that’s anything but boring! 

Each student should bring a sweater or a skirt to decorate. All craft supplies and embellishments will be provided.

Wycinanki Workshop: Polish Art of Cut Paper for ages 16+

Materials included

Originally, sheep shears were used to cut freehand designs out of tree bark and leather. Wycinanki were pasted on furniture or roof beams as decoration, hung in windows, and given as gifts. We will use decorative papers to create colorful works of art. Students will have the option to personalize the instructor’s samples (no two are exactly alike) or create your own design inspired by the upcoming holiday season. Your finished art will be ready to frame! 


Celebrate the Season with Science!
In this hands-on workshop, hosted by Nuts About Science at the Art House, students will explore the science behind winter wonders while making their own ornaments and snow to take home and enjoy year after year!

Learn to use colored pencils like never before! All experience and skill levels are welcome. There will be multiple lessons from beginner to intermediate, and return students have many choices for additional projects, or may bring one of their own. We will take a break around the halfway point – please feel free to bring a snack. 


Color Mixing and Color Theory Workshop for ages 16+

Spend a fun and informative morning exploring the magic of color! In this 3-hour hands-on workshop, students will learn the fundamentals of color theory and how to mix clean, vibrant colors using just a limited palette. We’ll cover hue, value, saturation, and temperature—plus how to create harmonious color combinations and avoid muddy mixes. Through guided exercises and demonstrations, students will build a personalized color chart and gain confidence in mixing any color they see. Perfect for painters of all levels who want to strengthen their understanding of color and bring more harmony and energy to their artwork.

Focus on Drawing: Animals Workshop for ages 8-12

Upcycle & Unwind: Fashion Lab for ages 8-15

This one-day workshop invites kids to explore fashion, art, and sustainability. Students will transform old garments into new creations using hand-sewing, basic embroidery, and surface design techniques like painting and stenciling. 

 Students will learn how to deconstruct garments, manipulate fabrics, and remake them into fresh, personalized pieces. Participants can bring old clothing and accessories—such as jeans, t-shirts, jackets, or other items ready for a second life—and experiment with colors, patterns, and textures to express their unique style. No experience needed—just creativity and imagination! 


Micro Memoir Workshop for ages 16+

Have you always wanted to write a memoir or were curious about the process? This workshop will focus on Micro-Memoir, a means to vibrantly write about a single event. Using class exercises and clues from a photo, memento, or memory, students will learn to design their writing voice, establish their memoir’s arc, and choose a writing vessel (prose, letter, poem, etc.) that fits their episode. Workshop goal is for students to leave with a draft that captures a single event from their life. These events can be tied together to build a broader memoir. Please bring a photo, memento, or a memory to write from. Also bring a notebook and pen or laptop to record your work. 


Stitch Craft 101 Workshop for ages 16+

Dive into sewing with our workshop led by a seasoned fashion designer. From machine basics and threading to troubleshooting, master the essentials. Learn to sew with precision, unravel the secrets of seams and hemming tips, understand fabric and grain, and elevate your skills. 

Participants are welcome to bring own sewing machine and a garment of their choice—such as a skirt or pants—to practice hemming or simple alterations. Whether you’re new to sewing or looking to refresh your skills, this workshop will help you elevate your craft with a touch of designer expertise. 


Creating Spontaneous Watercolor with Abstract Elements and Techniques Workshop for ages 16+

Printmaking Play Workshop for ages 16+

Did you know that a plethora of printmaking materials are hiding in your pantry and kitchen cupboards? Join us for this one-day workshop to learn more about “kitchen lithography” and other printmaking techniques that utilize supplies like tinfoil, Coca Cola, foam plates, curtain sheers, and more. You’ll leave with three completed prints, and the inspiration to see what else you can create using everyday items from around your home.

Celebrate Valentine’s season with a fun, hands-on sewing workshop! Perfect for beginners, this class introduces kids to the basics of sewing while inspiring creativity and self-expression. 

Participants will choose colorful fabrics, learn how to use simple patterns, and sew their own heart-shaped pillow—or create a custom “stuffy” of their choice! Each student will design, stitch, and stuff their project to take home a cozy, handmade creation. Whether made as a gift or a snuggly keepsake, every piece will be crafted with love and lots of fun! 


Colorful Koi: A Mixed Media Collage Workshop for ages 13+

Dive into the serene and shimmering world of koi fish in this vibrant, beginner-friendly mixed media workshop. Over two creative days, students will explore the art of collage through the graceful forms and flowing movement of koi—symbols of perseverance, balance, and good fortune. We’ll begin with an acrylic underpainting to establish color and motion beneath the surface, then build layers of patterned, textured, and translucent papers to capture the depth and rhythm of koi gliding through water. Shadia will guide students step by step as they experiment with color harmony, paper layering, and composition to bring their koi to life in a luminous, modern style. 

This workshop is perfect for all skill levels—no prior art experience required! Our focus will be on collage and layering techniques rather than traditional drawing or painting. By the end, you’ll have a stunning, ready-to-hang koi collage that reflects both your creativity and the tranquil energy of these beautiful fish.

Stained Glass Painting Workshop for ages 14+

In this fun and creative workshop, kids will learn hand embroidery basics. Using colorful threads and fabric, they will create an embroidered art piece to take home. Each child will keep an embroidery hoop to continue practicing and creating more designs at home. Students will explore ways to personalize their clothing and accessories—adding their names or unique designs to sweaters, tote bags, jean pockets, and more! This workshop is perfect for young creatives who love hands-on projects and want to develop a new skill in a fun and relaxed environment.

“Totes of Love” Workshop for ages 6-16

In this special International Women’s Day workshop, kids will design and decorate their own tote bag using fabric markers, stencils, trims, and more. They’ll also learn basic hand-sewing and simple embroidery stitches to personalize their tote with unique details and heartfelt messages. Participants will explore color, pattern, and texture as they create a one-of-a-kind tote—either for themselves or as a handmade gift for their mom or someone special.


Art Sampler Workshop for ages 16+

Art Around the World: Italy Workshop for ages 6-9

In this playful, hands-on workshop, children will hand-sew their adorable felt creature using a safe, big, blunt embroidery needle, felt shapes, and colorful embroidery thread. They’ll practice hand sewing with big embroidery needles, decorate their creation with fun accessories, and even give it a name and personality! This is a wonderful introduction to sewing, storytelling, and fine motor skill development. 


Hidden Blooms Workshop for ages 12+

Ready to explore the magic of painting what’s not there? In this lively and beginner-friendly workshop, artist Shadia Derbyshire will introduce students to the beautiful art of negative painting—a technique that reveals the subject by painting around it rather than inside the lines. We’ll pair this with rich collage layering to create a dynamic, textural floral composition that’s bursting with color and depth. 

We’ll begin with a colorful, abstract underpainting, then build up layers of collage papers to add pattern, texture, and personality. From there, students will learn how to use negative painting techniques to carve out elegant floral shapes—allowing a bouquet to emerge organically from the layers beneath.

Watercolor Workshop: Celebrate Your Favorite Place for ages 14+

Capture the memory of a meaningful place by turning it into a watercolor painting! Students will bring 8” x 10” photos of a location they would like to commemorate. We’ll explore color theory, color mixing, and watercolor techniques—including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry—using a variety of papers. Students will also get to experiment with creating texture. If you’re unsure about your drawing skills, no worries—tracing and image transfer options will be available, along with guidance on composition and drawing. This class is ideal for beginners and intermediate painters, but all levels are welcome!
