Workshops

Youth, Teen, and Adult Workshops offer the opportunity for students to experiment, learn, and develop art skills in small classroom sizes. Adult workshops are for ages 16+ unless otherwise noted. Workshops are led by Northville Art House instructors and are offered in one- or two-day sessions. Each workshop is limited to 10 students. Register today!

REFUND / CANCELLATION POLICY

A refund will be issued minus a 10% non-refundable deposit on ALL classes and workshops when cancelled 48 hours or more before the first class or workshop starts. Students who wish to cancel less than 48 hours before the first day of class are not eligible for a refund or credit.

Cyanotype: Camera-less Photography Workshop for ages 9-15

In this two-hour workshop, participants will create cyantotype prints using a historic camera-less photography technique. By placing objects on light-sensitive paper, exposing them to UV light, and rinsing with water, they’ll produce striking images, with the option to enhance them with watercolor washes. 


Fashion Lab Workshop for ages 13-17

This one-day intensive workshop invites creative teens to explore the intersection of fashion, art, and sustainability. Led by a professional fashion designer, this hands-on experience empowers students to reimagine and transform pre-worn garments into innovative, personalized designs. 

In addition to foundational fashion techniques—such as garment deconstruction, fabric manipulation, hand sewing, and textile exploration—participants will have the opportunity to incorporate surface design through painting, fabric markers, and stencil work. Students may use pre-made stencils or create their own to add custom graphics, patterns, or artistic elements to their garments. 

Whether designing with thread or paint, this lab encourages bold self-expression and experimentation. Students are encouraged to bring old clothing or accessories, such as jeans, t-shirts, or other garments ready for a second life. No prior experience is required; this workshop is ideal for both beginners and those with some sewing or design background. 


Mini Makers: Sew Your Own Felt Creature for ages 3-6

Let your little one’s imagination come to life! In this playful, hands-on workshop, children will hand-sew their adorable felt creature using a safe, big, blunt embroidery needle, felt shapes, and colorful embroidery thread. 

They’ll practice hand sewing with plastic needles, decorate their creation with fun accessories, and even give it a name and personality! This is a wonderful introduction to sewing, storytelling, and fine motor skill development. 


Stitch Craft 101: Alterations for ages 16+

Decorative Stuffed Pillows Workshop for ages 6-13

In this engaging, hands-on workshop, young crafters will dive into the world of textile design by creating their decorative fleece pillows in fun shapes such as hearts, stars, clouds, moons, and squares. Students will learn the basics of hand sewing in a supportive environment, with no-sew options available for beginners who are just getting started. 

As students gain confidence, more advanced participants will have the opportunity to enhance their designs with functional details like pockets or travel straps, adding both creativity and purpose to their finished pillows. 

With a mix of bold colors, soft textures, and plenty of imagination, each child will walk away with a personalized, cuddly creation they’ll be proud to show off. 

No experience needed. Sew or no-sew options are available. 


Celtic Knot Workshop: Patterns Across Cultures for ages 16+

In this 2-hour hands-on workshop, participants will learn the step-by-step techniques for creating traditional Celtic knotwork. Starting with simple grids and interlacing patterns, you’ll discover how to build elegant, flowing knots that can be used in borders, mandalas, or standalone designs. No prior drawing experience is required, just curiosity and a willingness to explore patterns.

Alongside the practical drawing exercises, we’ll also open a discussion about the presence of knot and interlace art in other cultures, such as the intricate cross designs of Ethiopian manuscripts and the continuous patterns of Indian kolam and rangoli. Together, we’ll reflect on how these symbols of interconnectedness appear across traditions, carrying themes of unity, infinity, and the sacred thread that links all life.

By the end of the session, you’ll leave with your own completed knotwork designs, a deeper appreciation of global interlacing traditions, and the skills to continue creating on your own.


Adult/Child Create Art Together Workshop for ages 7-11

Watercolor Workshop: Celebrate Your Favorite Place for ages 16+

Capture the memory of a meaningful place by turning it into a watercolor painting! Bring 8” x 10” photos of a location you’d like to commemorate. We’ll explore color theory, color mixing, and watercolor techniques—including wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry—using a variety of papers. You’ll also get to experiment with creating texture. If you’re unsure about your drawing skills, no worries—tracing and image transfer options will be available, along with guidance on composition and drawing. This class is ideal for beginners and intermediate painters, but all levels are welcome! 


Little Hands, Big Stitches: Intro to Sewing and Embroidery Workshop for ages 3-6

Mixed Media Collage Foundations for ages 12+

Ready to dive into the colorful world of mixed media? In this lively and beginner-friendly workshop, artist Shadia Derbyshire will guide you through the foundational techniques of collage—using layered papers to explore value, texture, and color in a fresh and dynamic way. 

We’ll start with a simple underpainting of an everyday object, then build depth and movement by layering papers of various weights, patterns, and transparencies. You’ll get hands-on instruction every step of the way as you play with shapes, experiment with textures, and choose your own unique color palette to bring your artwork to life. 

This workshop is perfect for all skill levels—even if you’ve never picked up a brush or glued down a single scrap of paper. Curious about how to read and use commercial sewing patterns? This hands-on workshop is the perfect starting point for anyone ready to take their sewing skills to the next level! 

In just two hours, you’ll learn how to understand, read, and cut a commercial pattern with confidence. We’ll walk you through how to decode pattern symbols and instructions; how to choose your size and adjust the pattern if needed; how to prepare your fabric and lay out the pieces; cutting techniques and best practices. 

Commercial patterns will be provided in class for learning and practice. You’re also welcome to bring your pattern and fabric if you’d like to get a head start on a personal project with guided support.

Transform a vintage photograph using needle and thread! Wycinanki Workshop: Polish Art of Cut Paper for ages 16+

Originally, sheep shears were used to cut freehand designs out of tree bark and leather. Wycinanki were pasted on furniture or roof beams as decoration, hung in windows, and given as gifts. We will use decorative papers to create colorful works of art. Students will have the option to personalize the instructor’s samples (no two are exactly alike) or create your own design inspired by the upcoming holiday season. Your finished art will be ready to frame!

Get into the holiday spirit with this joyful, hands-on mixed media workshop! Join artist Shadia Derbyshire for a fun and festive creative session where we’ll layer vibrant acrylics, playful paint pens, and beautiful collage papers to create a dazzling poinsettia masterpiece—complete with shimmering metallic accents.
 
You’ll be guided step-by-step while choosing your own color palette and design style to make a truly unique holiday keepsake. Want to add extra sparkle? We’ll explore how to incorporate metallic foils, leafing, and iridescent paints for that magical holiday glow!
 
All materials are provided, but feel free to bring a printed poinsettia photo for inspiration and any fun holiday-themed tissue papers, greeting cards, or decorative paper bits you’d like to use in your collage.

One of the most asked questions with sugar cookie decorating is, “How do you make royal icing the right consistency to decorate with?” If you struggle with getting your icing to the right consistency or just want to learn how to decorate those fancy sugar cookies you see using royal icing, this is the class for you! 

Join Audrey Edwards owner of Sweetflour LLC for a hands-on experience as she takes you through the royal icing making process from scratch. You will use the icing made in class to decorate some holiday themed sugar cookies.
